Going Low

by David Shefter   USGA

It's amazing how well some guys perform when there's absolutely no pressure. Look at some of the good scores being produced on Sunday by the non-contenders. Heath Slocum is four under par through 14 holes. Carl Pettersson has moved into a tie for 11th after playing 3-under-par golf through five holes. Stewart Cink and Retief Goosen are each three under for the day.

You would like to see some of the guys just behind 54-hole leader Tiger Woods shoot some low numbers today. That would make for some compelling golf. I'm not saying they need a Johnny Miller-like 63 (Oakmont in 1973), but perhaps a 67 or 68 is in the offing. That would make for some compelling prime-time television.
