Junior Day

by Ken Klavon   USGA

They came mainly from Southern California. More than 700 kids took part in the USGA's annual Junior Day festivities Sunday at Torrey Pines. Dennis Walters, who is a trick-shot artist paralyzed from a golf cart accident, performs. He never fails to draw laughter.

Our president, Jim Vernon, and one of our vice presidents, Jay Rains, also participated. In all, there are 25 programs represented, many of them affiliated with the USGA in some capacity.

When the Walters show was finished, the junior golfers were allowed to putt (with some keeping their balls if they sunk it), given tours and visited the Merchandise Pavilion. It was cute listening to some of them enter the Media Center. They were awestruck. A few were allowed to sit on the podium where the player interviews will be conducted.

All in all, a good day.
