The U.S. Open Media Center still is the same large monstrosity, but those who fill the temporary structure during championship week are down. Whether it's the economy or the prime-time East Coast finish on the weekend, less members of the media have come to the U.S. Open in 2008. Some of the major papers missing this year include the Miami Herald, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Baltimore Sun and New York Newsday.
We've also heard credential applications are significantly down for the PGA Championship in August at Oakland Hills outside of Detroit and for the British Open in July.
This is definitely a sad trend. Newspapers are feeling the crunch of the economy and are cutting staffing in significant numbers, and editors are being forced to trim travel budgets.
Makes you wonder what the landscape of the media will be in 10 years.
