Slocum Sizzles

by David Shefter   USGA

Heath Slocum has just carded the best round at a U.S. Open in five years with his 6-under-par 65 at Torrey Pines. The last time anyone shot 65 or lower was 2003 at Olympia Fields, where Vijay Singh had a second-round 63 to tie a major-championship 18-hole mark and Nick Price shot 65. Tom Watson and Brett Quigley opened that championship with 65s, with the late Bruce Edwards on the bag for Watson in what was an emotional loop around the course.

Apparently, low scores are out there today with several teeing grounds moved up to give players options to be more aggressive.
